Invest in Pet-Friendly Furniture

First and foremost, you’ll want to purchase pet-friendly furniture. So, what type of furniture is pet-friendly?

Well, think durable, stain-resistant, and easy to clean materials. Say, yes to performance fabrics, synthetics, and leather.

Avoid delicate fabrics and materials that attract pet hair like silk, linen, or velvet. You may want to stay away from lighter colors that can show stains more easily. Also, avoid pieces of furniture that might look like a nice chew toy or scratching post for your pet. This means stay clear of rattan and opt for metals instead.

Create Pet-Friendly Windows

Both dogs and cats, especially if they spend a lot of time indoors, love to look out windows and lay in the sun. Select window treatments that allow them to do this. Avoid super heavy curtains, shades, or shutters. Instead, go for lighter curtains or blinds that allow your pet to peak through and let in the light.

Also if you like to open your windows, be sure to include screens on them to keep your pets safe.

Go for Tile or Wood Flooring

Install floors that are durable and easy to clean. Carpet locks in dirt and odors, and it’s more difficult to disinfect than porcelain tile or wood flooring.

Some woods can be susceptible to stains, scratches, and dents, so that’s something to look into if you like the look of hardwood flooring. Oak or mahogany are harder woods and might be a better choice. Otherwise, laminate is more durable and a good solution.

Choose rugs that are easy to clean. There are even great machine-washable options. Tighter knit fabrics are the way to go, avoid anything with a larger weave like jute which can trap dirt and pet messes and be very difficult to get clean.

Include Covered Plush Surfaces

Pets love to curl up on cozy surfaces. If you allow your pets on your furniture but also want it to be protected and covered, incorporate lots of machine-washable blankets and throws. You can drape these on your sofas and chairs - even your bed.

This helps minimize the pet hair on your furniture and you can easily toss the blankets in with the wash on laundry day.

Include a Mudroom or Pet-Specific Areas

You may want to include an area or room in your home that’s just for your pets.

This could be a mudroom that has a pet feeding and washing station, storage for pet food and bowls, or a litter box.

Or you might way to incorporate a play area for your pet. If so, pick toys and chews that are aesthetically pleasing so they still look cute if left out. Also, match your pet’s bed or sleeping area to the design of your house and include storage baskets or bins to stylishly hide your pet’s things.

Having a dedicated place they can have playtime, helps prevent them from running around and making a mess of the whole house.

If you don’t have space for a mudroom, think about an entryway that allows for pet drying and cleaning. This way if your pet comes in and is a bit wet and muddy, you have room to clean them off so they don’t automatically rub down on your sofa or rug.

Select Colors with Your Pet’s Fur in Mind

Think about the color of your pet’s fur and incorporating similar colors in your furnishings and decor. This could be with a sofa, chair, or rug - especially if it’s a spot that your pet likes to hang out in. That way when you don’t have time to vacuum the hair isn’t noticeable.

Consider the Scale of Furniture

Animals aren’t always aware of their surroundings, a happy or excited pup could easily knock things over by mistake. Rather than getting angry at your pet, avoid tables or furniture that’s too low to the ground or at your pet’s height. This will help prevent accidents and messes to clean up.

Think About Custom or Built-In Solutions

If you’re planning a new build or remodel you have the opportunity to create custom solutions for your pets.

This could be a custom mudroom or bathing area, built-in storage for pet food or litter box, or a nook for them to sleep and rest in.

Maybe you want to incorporate stylish pet pens and gates into your home design. Or for those dedicated pet lovers, perhaps you want to create the ultimate play zone for them, the options are endless.
