Get Organized: How to Refresh Your Home for the New Year
The new year brings with it a lot of possibilities. We all usually have goals related to work, relationships, or family that we want to achieve – additionally sprucing up the home often falls on a lot of people's lists.
Whether you want to take on a larger remodel project or just want to make a few changes, we’re covering ways you can refresh your home to get 2023 started on the right foot.
Plan Your House Goals for the Year
A great way to figure out what things you want to tackle for the year is to set some house goals.
Ask yourself what projects have you been putting off? Is there anything that needs maintenance, fixing, or replacing? Do any of your rooms need a refresh or a complete overhaul?
Start putting a list together and assess with your partner your shared priorities. Is it reasonable for you to tackle the whole list in the new year, or should some things be moved to the next year?
Determine your budget and then start figuring out what projects you can start and when. It’ll keep you organized and make you feel like you have a solid plan for the year ahead.
Deep Clean, Organize, and Declutter
While traditionally you may think of spring cleaning, the start of the year is a great time to take care of deep cleaning and organization around your home.
Clean those spaces that you forget about during most of the year like windows, behind appliances, and deep clean those rugs or carpets.
Get into an organizational mindset and declutter your home. This starts with putting away holiday decorations. Reassess and get rid of things you no longer need. Or even better think about what you can repurpose and use in a new way. We’re all for upcycling rather than just throwing things in the trash. If you’re not able to reuse something try donating it instead.
Consider Your New Years' Resolutions
If you love to make resolutions for yourself, think if any of them can be incorporated into your home.
For example, if you want to read more, how about a cozy reading nook? If it’s your goal to practice yoga or meditate, can you create areas in your home for those activities? Or if you want to spend more quality time with your family, consider your living room setup – is it the ideal space for the whole family to spend time in?
If you intentionally design spaces that function to achieve your goals then those activities or practices are more likely to become part of your regular routine.
Add Pops of Color
Adding a little color to a room is a good way to brighten it up. Start small with accents like pillows, artwork, or pieces of furniture. Or go a little bolder by refreshing the walls with a new paint color.
For some color inspiration, take a look at Pantone and Benjamin Moore's colors of the year which are Viva Magenta and Raspberry Blush.

Try New Wallpaper
Maybe you’ve been wanting to dive into the wonderful world of wallpaper but have been afraid to pull the trigger?
Adding wall coverings to a small powder room or even just a single accent wall can make a space feel modern and updated. If you’re new to the wallpaper game, we have advice on how to incorporate wallpaper into your home like a pro.
Refresh Your Accents
Are some of your accent pieces looking a little worn and tired? Switching up your accent pieces are small changes that can make a big difference.
Think about refreshing your bedding, towels, or pillows and throw blankets. What about putting up a new piece of artwork? Or restyling those shelves or coffee table?
It’s the thoughtful details that make a space feel personal, polished, and complete. Even something as easy as adding a plant or two indoors brings life and energy into a room.
Rearrange Your Existing Furnishings and Decor
In the spirit of working with what you already have, something as simple as rearranging your existing furniture can go a long way in creating a new look.
Perhaps you have an accent chair in your bedroom that can work in the living room or swap out a rug from one room to another. Maybe that bench in your entryway actually works better at the end of your bed.
Take a look at the artwork around your house and see which pieces can be given a new home. Switching a few things around or experimenting with a new layout can make a space feel reinvigorated and refreshed.
