How to Create a Sustainable Natural Swimming Pool in Your Backyard
In a world where environmental consciousness is becoming increasingly vital, eco-friendly home design is a priority for many homeowners. You can design your entire home inside and out to be eco-friendly.
If you’ve been thinking about adding a swimming pool to your yard, consider a natural swimming pool as a beautiful and environmentally responsible alternative. Originally popularized throughout Europe and Australia, they’re becoming more common in North America. In this post, we’re diving into natural swimming pools and how you can create a swimming oasis in your backyard while promoting biodiversity and minimizing environmental impact.
What Is a Natural Swimming Pool?
First things first, you may be wondering what a natural swimming pool is and how it differs from a traditional pool.
A natural swimming pool or swimming pond, is a harmonious blend of a traditional swimming area and a bio-filtered regeneration zone. Unlike conventional pools that rely on chlorine, these pools use plants, microorganisms, and carefully balanced ecosystems to maintain crystal-clear and healthy water.
The regeneration zone is made up of a combination of carefully selected plants and natural biofilters. These remarkable plants act as nature's own filtration system, absorbing excess nutrients and impurities, while also releasing life-giving oxygen into the water.
The natural filters within this zone are made up of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria that reside within filters made up of natural materials. These bacterial marvels work harmoniously to break down and digest organic matter, ensuring the water remains pure and free from unwanted elements.
Next to the regeneration zone is the swimming area designed for recreation and relaxation. Similar to traditional pools, this area remains free of plants and sediment, providing a clear and inviting space for you and your family to swim.
There are different ways to design natural pools from some that look more like traditional pools to others that mimic the look and feel of natural ponds.
What Are the Benefits of a Natural Pool?
There are many benefits of natural swimming pools. Since they don’t require chemicals, they provide a safe and eco-friendly environment for swimmers and wildlife alike. The water is pure, free of harmful substances, and safe for children and pets. Additionally, natural pools support local biodiversity by attracting a diverse range of flora and fauna.
Though a natural pool may cost more upfront to install, it requires less maintenance, as they’re built to sustain themselves, so you’ll be saving money long term. The installation cost is $70,000 on average, however, this will vary based on your location and the condition of your yard (RocketHomes).
How to Create a Natural Pool
You can convert a pond, a traditional pool, or an underused area of your yard into a beautiful natural swimming pool. Below we’re covering what you’ll need to consider and the steps you’ll need to take.
Natural Swimming Pool Planning and Design
Before embarking on the journey of creating your natural swimming pool, careful planning is essential. Assess your backyard's size, shape, and topography, as these factors will influence the design. Take note of the amount of sunlight and shade your yard receives throughout the day, as this will impact the growth of aquatic plants.
Next, decide on the style of your pool, whether it be a formal design that complements a well-manicured garden or an informal one that blends seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape.
Choose appropriate water plants and aquatic life to foster a balanced ecosystem and ensure efficient natural filtration. In a temperate climate, the most commonly used plants are water lilies, perennial grasses, pond sedge, and swamp hibiscus.
Alternatively, there are biofilters available if you don’t want a regeneration zone with water plants. This is a better choice if you want the look of a traditional pool.
You’ll want to be aware of local regulations and obtain any required permits before building your natural swimming pool. Complying with zoning laws and pool regulations will help ensure a smooth installation process.
Construction and Implementation
The construction process starts with preparing the area and excavation. Minimize soil disturbance and consider retaining natural features like rocks and trees to preserve the ecosystem's integrity.
Once you’ve dug your hole a portion will need to be designed for the regeneration zone or biofilter system. As mentioned above it’s a carefully designed combination of gravel, plants, and beneficial microorganisms.
Like a traditional pool, you’ll need to include a protective layer over the dirt, we prefer stone dust which acts like concrete, and then a porous liner, then cover your liner with gravel or stone.
Water Filtration and Maintenance of Your Natural Pool
Like a traditional pool, you’ll also need to include a drain and hose system to help with water motion and filtration. In our designs, we’ve used a sump as the main drain along with aeration ports and waterfalls to keep the natural look of the pool. As mentioned above, the natural water filtration system is driven by biofilters and carefully selected plants.
Routine maintenance tasks are relatively simple and enjoyable, much like gardening. Skim the water's surface to remove debris, and tend to the water plants through pruning and care. Encourage the presence of beneficial wildlife, such as dragonflies and water beetles, as they aid in maintaining a natural balance.
We recommend an annual deep clean using a pond vacuum, skimming the bottom for debris, checking that all your pumps and hoses are in good working order, and adding more beneficial bacteria to your biofilter.
Eco-Friendly Landscaping and Surroundings
To complement your natural swimming pool, implement eco-friendly landscaping in your backyard. Opt for native plants and trees that are well-suited to your local climate, reducing the need for excessive watering. Introduce sustainable hardscaping materials, like recycled or reclaimed products, for pathways and seating areas. Employ energy-efficient lighting options, such as solar-powered lights, to illuminate your pool area during the evenings.
