A Modern Cape Make Under

Jen and Derek’s Montauk bungalow required a light touch. Minor edits, like expanding the master bedroom, opening the staircase, and removing arched doorways, were enough to add more space without losing charm. To the same effect, we wanted to retain the home’s original accents; brickwork, shiplap, and wooden paneling, when painted white, became subtle textures rather than heavy materials. With furniture and fabrics in neutral tones, this lovely “make under” was completed with an eye-catching exterior in navy.  A rebuild would have erased this modern Cape Codder’s innate quaintness—and there’s no imitating quaint.
