Redefining the grandeur of a 90's Colonial
As a family, we were seeking a home that was relatively unique, comfortable, and approachable. As a designer, I was seeking a bespoke home that transcended boundaries. Yet at the height of Covid we decided to buy a house that lacked most everything we sought…it was one of four available houses in the area, a house I never saw myself in, let alone our family.
The challenge became how to redefine and redesign a 90's colonial. The design approach incorporated surrounding environments, history’s of an old Hudson River town, current trends, and old-world nostalgia.
Incorporating the surrounding landscape and desired concepts was challenging but rewarding. We fused gritty linens, raspy woods, raw plaster, and rare unique stones to create a dynamic tapestry flowing from room to room. While all of these luxurious elements are of high value, they come from a place of truth and humility; nature.
Custom art and vintage furnishings created a story of a road well traveled. Unpredictability came from a massive 120” single slab cantilever marble kitchen island. New age Peek-a-Boo glass insets and glass railings were fused into an old world plaster staircase creating a beautiful juxtaposition of old and new.
Finally, with a sense of humor, we returned to the 90’s. 90’s textile patterns, 90’s mini vinyl blinds, and a modern take on your parents 90’s black leather couch… to name a few.
Inside and out, this home stays true to its bold nostalgic 90’s roots but now with a design that brings it well into the modern age.
