What is a Commission?

First, you might be wondering what an artwork commission is exactly? Essentially, to commission an artwork from an artist or gallery, means that the artist is creating a custom piece especially for you, based on your specifications.

Why You May Commission a Custom Artwork

There are many reasons why you might want to commission an artwork. Some of the most common are:

Need to match a certain design scheme or style - Perhaps you’re in the process of redesigning a room or your home and you’re looking for something specific to coordinate with the design. This could be a specific style, color, or size. Commissioning a piece could ensure that you get exactly what you need to fit the space!

An artwork you like has already sold - Maybe you’ve had your eye on a piece of art but someone else buys it before you! The artist might have other options that are similar, but you really had your heart set on that one. Not to worry! You could work with the artist on a commission that’s as similar as possible to the one that sold.

An artwork you like is the wrong size or color - Alternatively, you’ve found the perfect piece and fallen in love, BUT it’s the wrong size for the space you want to hang it. Or it would work perfectly if the color palette was tweaked a bit. As a solution to these issues, you could commission a similar work at the exact right size or with better coloring.

You want a special custom piece - Or maybe you just like the idea of having a one-of-a-kind artwork that was made especially for you. Commissioning an artwork fun way to get something special, unique, and personalized.

Customize a photo - Perhaps you have a photo of a beloved pet or a sentimental family portrait that you’d like to turn into a custom painting. Working with an artist on a commission can commemorate that special moment for you.

Process for Commissioning a Custom Artwork

So now that you know getting a custom artwork is common, you might be wondering how to go about commissioning a painting or other type of artwork.

Each artist and gallery will have their own process but, in general, most will follow some form of the following:

First, you’ll want to confirm with the artist or gallery that it’s possible. Don’t assume, some don’t offer commissions, so don’t be offended if it’s something that the artist just doesn’t do. And respect their decision - they often have their reasons why it’s not a service they offer.

Next, you’ll work with the artist/gallery to create a commission agreement. This often includes:

  • Pricing details

    • Total cost and payment terms

  • Overall timeline

  • Details about the artwork - subject matter, composition, style, color, size, etc.

  • If progress updates and/or revisions are included

  • Approval process

  • Contract to sign

During the commission agreement process, you’ll want to be as detailed and descriptive as possible about what you want. This way the artist and gallery can provide you with the best result possible.

Many will require a 50% deposit to start work, this usually covers the cost of materials and confirms your commitment to buying the piece when it’s complete.

It’s important to respect the artist’s process, especially if you are commissioning work to look like a piece the artist has created previously. Originals are handmade works, not manufactured pieces so it’s impossible for an artist to replicate an artwork exactly, but they usually will do their best to make it as similar as possible.

It’s a fun experience and gives you the opportunity to connect and collaborate with an artist and enjoy the process. The final result is often better than expected as you’re left with a special custom piece that you can treasure for years.
