Catskill Mountain’s Hudson River Home Before & After

Within the picturesque Catskill Mountains of Ulster Park, we transformed a modern lackluster residence into a luxurious mountain sanctuary—seamlessly marrying contemporary sophistication with rustic mid-century charm.

We’re excited to share that our project: Catskill Mountains Hudson River Home has been featured in Architectural Digest’s Clever! Head over to Clever for a grand tour of the project, along with behind-the-scenes insights from Stefania.

Below we’re diving into a before-and-after, so you can get a full sense of the transformation—where luxury mountain living meets a stylic rustic sanctuary.

Before: A Blank Canvas

The original space, though recently renovated, lacked the character and personality befitting its stunning mountain surroundings. Modern, generic, and sterile—it didn’t match the client's taste, nor did it function for their lifestyle. They were looking for a beautiful, comfortable mountain escape where they could enjoy entertaining.

However, amidst these challenges, the home boasted captivating features like its breathtaking riverfront view, double balconies, and the promise of seamless indoor-outdoor living. It presented us with an opportunity to weave magic and warmth into a blank canvas.

The Transformation Process

Challenges Meet Solutions

One of the challenges was to enhance space and functionality without expanding the home's footprint.

To create a more functional kitchen, we removed the breakfast nook and crafted an inviting entry. This allowed us to expand the kitchen to accommodate a second island, adding style, functionality, and luxury. Getting rid of the back cabinetry and opting for floating wood shelving created a sense of openness.

The original laundry room was turned into an intimate office space to make the space more useful in a world of hybrid and remote work.

Inspiration from Luxury Boat Design

Drawing inspiration from luxury boat design, we envisioned wood-lined walls and subtle nautical touches to infuse a warm and inviting ambiance. The kitchen became a striking focal point, the wood panels with Corchia Antico marble contrasted beautifully, and the brass accents brought out the touches of gold veining in the marble.

The kitchen sconces, evoking little portholes, added a playful yet elevated touch. While geometric patterns in textiles paid homage to sailing stripes, creating cohesive design throughout the home.

Rustic Charm Meets Mid-Century Elegance

The hemlock wood paneling extended to the living room which paired with a tumbled stone fireplace exuded rustic charm, inviting cozy evenings by the fire.

Vintage textiles and furnishings, balanced with modern pieces, infused the home with a nostalgic yet contemporary vibe. Carefully curated artwork and decorative accents created a lived-in atmosphere, embracing both history and modernity.

Seamless Integration with Nature

As you move through the home, stunning vistas unfold from nearly every room, seamlessly integrating the design with the natural beauty of the surroundings. The careful attention to the exterior continued, with thoughtfully selected deck furniture complementing the river view. A repurposed boat sail served as deck shade, tying back to our nautical inspiration.

Environmental Consciousness

Sustainable practices played a vital role in the design process. We prioritized keeping or reusing original appliances and materials whenever feasible. The original flooring was retained throughout the home. In the kitchen, we elevated builder-grade cabinets with custom touches. In the bathrooms, we used the existing hardware and fixtures while upgrading the vanities and accents.

We incorporated sustainable, locally manufactured furniture throughout the home to underscore our dedication to eco-conscious living.

After: A Beautiful Cozy Moutain Escape

The culmination of our efforts resulted in a breathtaking mountain retreat that embraces modern luxury living within an eco-conscious and timeless environment. From the inviting entry to the cozy living spaces, and the deck with a custom cedar hot tub offering panoramic views of the Hudson River, every corner of this home now tells a story of sophistication and harmony with nature. It's not just a home; it's an experiential escape—a unique haven in the heart of the Catskill Mountains.
