Rhinebeck Estate

A Historic Property Reimagined for Modern Family Living

Once part of the legendary John Jacob Astor estate, this 500,000-square-foot Rhinebeck property carries layers of Hudson Valley history. Our task was to reimagine it as a soulful, modern family home — one that honors its storied past while embracing the rhythm of contemporary life.

At the heart of the home, a hand-painted fireplace anchors the living room, layered with patterned textiles, vintage upholstery, and sculptural lighting. Natural light floods the space, creating a setting both elegant and lived-in.

The challenge became how to redefine and redesign a 90’s colonial.
The design approach incorporated surrounding environments, history’s of an old Hudson River town, current trends, and old-world nostalgia.

The Rhinebeck kitchen reimagined: veined marble, aged brass, and layered textures create a space that’s both functional and breathtaking.

The kitchen was conceived as both a showpiece and gathering space, defined by a monumental veined marble island and aged brass details — a juxtaposition of durability and drama. Throughout the home, we curated custom art and vintage furnishings, weaving in unpredictability through scale, texture, and bold material choices.

In a corner of the lounge, a bold green flue fireplace becomes an unexpected focal point. Paired with textured linens, warm wood, and brass accents, it balances nostalgia with modernity. The intimate design transforms the nook into a cozy retreat for winter nights, a quintessential Hudson Valley moment of comfort and style.

Across the home, the studio bar offers a lighter, more playful counterpoint. Curved seating, shearling throws, and a sculptural woven chandelier create a relaxed, creative atmosphere. With a marble-topped bar and custom shelving, the room transitions seamlessly from a quiet workspace into a vibrant spot for entertaining.

Art-lined halls open into bedrooms where design becomes more intimate, layered, and personal.

Where the guest room speaks to calm and refinement, the children’s bedrooms come alive with color, creativity, and imagination. Thoughtfully designed for comfort and character, each space reflects the essence of family living in the Hudson Valley.

Each bedroom tells its own story — layered with textures, color, and personality. From soft florals and playful details that invite everyday comfort to imaginative spaces where design sparks creativity, these rooms capture the essence of modern family living with soul.

The primary suite extends into a spa-like retreat where design and function align. Natural light floods the bathroom, highlighting marble finishes, sculptural fixtures, and warm wood tones. A freestanding tub anchors the space, framed by lush garden views — transforming daily rituals into moments of calm and luxury.

Beyond the interiors, life extends outdoors — where the deck and natural swimming pond blur the line between house and landscape.

Outdoors, the deck and natural pond extend the home’s sense of sanctuary. Shade sails ripple overhead while striped loungers and playful floats bring color and rhythm to the water — a tableau that balances relaxation with editorial detail.

At the water’s edge, the deck and pond create a sculptural tableau for swimming and gathering. Shade sails ripple overhead, while in the distance, a canvas tent transforms the meadow into a retreat — part editorial set, part family hideaway.

At the edge of the property, a vegetable garden and glasshouse take center stage — framed by meadows and enlivened by animals roaming freely. Here, the landscape becomes both larder and living scene.

Beyond the pond and shaded deck, the property opens into a working landscape — a blend of ornamental beauty and purposeful design. The vegetable garden is framed by gravel paths and climbing trellises, while the glasshouse offers both charm and utility, brimming with seasonal plantings and tools of the trade. Just beyond, animals roam freely, adding life and movement to the rhythm of the garden. It’s a space where cultivation and care turn the land itself into a living story.
